How is fossil coral formed?
Fossil coral is also called petrified coral. It comes from a mineral transformation of prehistoric corals over the millennia. Corals, marine organisms living in colonies of polyps, produce a calcareous skeleton, more or less large and branched. When the corals die, their skeletons are deposited on the ocean floor and are gradually covered with sediment. Under the effect of geological pressures and time, the calcium in the skeletons is transformed into minerals. This process, called petrification, takes place over millions of years. The minerals replace the organic tissues, thus preserving the structure of the coral in mineral form. The colors and patterns of this stone depend on the minerals present in the corals' environment at the time of petrification.

Fossil coral belongs to the category of organic stones. It is not a semi-precious stone.
