The properties of dendritic opal

The term dendrite and the qualifier dendritic come from the Greek “dendron” which means “tree”. Scientifically in the field of gems, it is used to refer to a crystal having a development in the form of multiple ramifications, also known by the more familiar term of arborescence.

Most dendritic opals come from deposits in Australia and Madagascar. The Madagascar deposit was only discovered in 2008.

The name opal originates from Sanskrit and the word “upala”, which means precious stone. In the time of the Greeks and Romans the opal was highly appreciated on the one hand as a lucky charm, and on the other hand for its therapeutic virtues in close relationship with the eye, the ophthalmos: the stone of the eyes.
