The YOKO women's black onyx necklace is a fine model, made of 6 mm natural stones. Embellished with two beads engraved with a lotus flower, it is a jewel with a chic and refined design. Entirely handmade by Mahesh, our artisan-partner in Kathmandu, Nepal, this jewel carries the values ​​of fair trade.

The properties of onyx

The onyx is white to yellowish, but also black. It is rather the black onyx which is known and used in jewelery. The main deposits of onyx are found in India, Brazil, Mexico, the United States, Uruguay and Madagascar.

It's a gem used for centuries. The Egyptians carved bowls in the white onyx, from the second dynasty. Persians and Indians believed that onyx protected the eye and could relieve a woman's pain during childbirth. But it was in England during the reign of Queen Victoria that the black onyx took off. It became commonplace in mourning jewelry, then fashion developed around this semi-precious stone and its use became commonplace.

In lithotherapy onyx is considered a stone of strength. Onyx is known to stabilize the body and strengthen the bone marrow. It is supposed to be a great help against arthritis, weakness of the liver and kidneys.

Symbolic of the lotus flower

The lotus flower represents a Buddhist metaphor. This beautiful flower blossoms in the middle of swamps, which represents the possibility for any individual to reach enlightenment, whatever his or her starting environment. The lotus draws its beauty from the darkness of the mud, which makes a reference to the Buddha who decided to give up his life of prince after seeing the old age and the death of his eyes. The lotus flower can symbolize the path of enlightenment:
• roots, purely material and below the surface of the water.
• leaves that open with the day above the surface of the water.
• Finally, the majestic flower that emerges from the heart and could be assimilated to enlightenment.
